Published Jun 24, 2019If you've been itching for another 28 Days Later film, you're about to get one. Director Danny Boyle has confirmed new instalment in the zombie franchise is headed our way.
The news come via a new interview with The Independent, where Boyle revealed a 28 Days Later sequel is in the works, marking the third film in the series and first since 2007's 28 Weeks Later. This time, though, original screenwriter Alex Garland will be back onboard.
"Alex Garland and I have a wonderful idea for the third part," Boyle said. "It's properly good."
He continued: "The original film led to a bit of a resurgence in the zombie drama and it doesn't reference any of that. It doesn't feel stale at all. He's concentrating on directing his own work at the moment, so it's stood in abeyance really, but it's a you-never-know."
While 28 Weeks Later was directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, it doesn't appear he will be involved in this upcoming film. It's also unclear if Boyle is directing or if it will be Garland, who's since gone on to direct such films as Ex Machina and Annihilation.
It's also unclear what the upcoming sequel could be titled — though the clunky name of 28 Months/Years Later was floated by Garland back in 2015 — or when the film could see release.
So for now, stay tuned.
Boyle's next film is Yesterday, which arrives in theatres on June 28. You can read Exclaim!'s review of the film.
