Published Mar 01, 2001Who are you? Jesse Dangerously.
What are you up to? Recording my four-year, two-CD sophomore solo album entitled "How To Express Your Dissenting Political Viewpoint Through Origami."
Hometown and current HQ: Halifax, NS.
Current fixations: DVD extras, anime fansubs, post rock, the formation of nebulae, criticising thighs.
Mind altering work of art (not your own): Dante Alighieri's "Inferno," Neon Genesis Evangelion, Doctor Octagon, Company Flow's "Funcrusher Plus," Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition."
Most memorable/inspirational gig and why? Halifax Hip-Hop Heros tour last summer. The talent in this city is unmatched, but it's augumented by adding U.S. underground superheroes Sole (of Anticon) and Sage Francis (of Non-Prophets). Can't be described. Wow.
What should everyone shut up about? Nothing. Discussion is important in all matters. If no one's saying the right things, it means more people should talk about it and set it straight.
Your greatest strength and weakness: I'm honestly a phenomenally gifted MC/producer/percussionist with a keen grasp of odd
time signatures and moderate skill in expressing emotions and/or concepts. However, I'm pathologically uindermotivated and rather irresponsible.
Your vital daily ritual: Electronic correspondance email, ICQ, mailing lists, webboards/messageboards I am trapped.
Guilty pleasure: Certain really awful rap records by certain really awful New Orleans "artists."
If I wasn't playing music I would be: Devoting my life to my second great passion rampant consumerism.
Your most memorable day job: Elementary school crossing guard.
Best/worst advice received:
I've always been guided more by general influence than much direct advice.
I would drop everything to play a benefit for: Just about any casue of a reasonably liberal nature.
What makes you want to take it off and get it on? Nothing but the dog in me!
What personal trait would make you kick someone out of your band? And have you? I can't think of a likely circumstance where I'd actually be in be with anyone possessing any traits odious enough for me to be so mean, actually.
When I think of Canada I think: I think socialized medicine, weak dollar, archaic obscenity laws.
Music and sex: Is there a difference? Why? Yes. They're very different, but listening is important in both cases.
Strangest brush with celebrity: Steve Poltz signed my left show Dan the Automater once e-mailed me Doug and the Slugs sang me a lullabye once when I was at their concert (age 4).
What does your mom wish you were doing instead? Rather than be a struggling musician, my mother wishes that I would be a successful musician. I must say I agree with her.
