Published Oct 15, 2019The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has revealed the shortlist of artists that will be eligible for induction in 2020.
Of the 16-artist shortlist, first-time nominees include Whitney Houston, Notorious B.I.G., Motörhead, Dave Matthews Band, Pat Benatar, Soundgarden, T. Rex, Thin Lizzy and the Doobie Brothers.
Repeat nominees include Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, Judas Priest, Rufus featuring Chaka Khan, Kraftwerk, MC5 and Todd Rundgren.
The list of artists selected for induction will be announced in January, and the ceremony itself will take place on May 2.
Musicians are eligible for nomination 25 years after the release of their first commercial recording. A committee then votes for their picks based on "an artist's musical influence on other artists, length and depth of career and the body of work, innovation and superiority in style and technique."
Fans can also contribute votes starting today, with the five most-voted-for artists getting submitted as one official ballot. See full instructions here.
This year marks a transition for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner will step down as chairman. John Sykes, president of iHeartMedia and a former MTV exec, will start his role as chairman on January 1.
Last year's inductees were Radiohead, the Cure, Janet Jackson, Stevie Nicks, Roxy Music, the Zombies and Def Leppard.
