Published Sep 17, 2020In a year as shitty as 2020, Knuckle Puck's aptly named third full-length album, 20/20, might just be the uplifting kick we all need to make it through to 2021.
Unlike previous albums Copacetic and Shapeshifter, the vibes on 20/20 are overwhelmingly positive. Gone are the introspective songs about failed relationships and personal failures the Chicago quintet are known for writing. Instead, listeners are introduced to tracks reassuring us that "everything is going to be okay."
The album starts off with the title track "20/20," a song about dusting yourself off and realizing that things aren't as bad as they seem. Sure, your life might suck right now, but there's always a light at the end of the tunnel. The band reminds listeners that "everything is temporary" and "we'll never get a second chance."
"Tune You Out" continues their reformed attitude. Rather than writing another song about fighting with an ex-girlfriend or wondering what went wrong with the relationship, the band write about not getting into pointless fights and leaving if you have to — a much healthier mindset. This song truly shows how much the band has matured in the last four years.
The next few tracks ("RSVP," "Breathe," "What Took You So Long") all follow similar themes of not worrying about what others think about you. Take a deep breath and realize that you're the only person that truly matters.
"Green Eyes (Polarized) is arguably the best song because of the beautiful opening riff. The picked, reverb-kissed guitar is especially unique.
Aside from the lyrics, the bouncy overdriven guitars and bright vocals help tie in the positive vibes on the album. Knuckle Puck has never sounded this sonically cohesive. Each track effortlessly flows into the next.
If you need a pick-me-up after the hand 2020 has dealt, then definitely check out Knuckle Puck's new album 20/20. It guaranteed will make your day better. (Rise)
